I’ve been there—walking the well-worn trail, doing what everyone else was doing because it felt safe. In the Service I knew discipline and structure. But when I transitioned to civilian life and started building an online business, I found myself asking the hard question: Why am I doing the same thing everyone else does?
That question became my turning point. Why not break away? Why not be the opposite of what’s expected?
We’ve been told not to follow the crowd, and yet most of us end up doing exactly that. But here’s the thing—I’ve seen first hand that those who step off the beaten path, who dare to do it differently, are the ones who truly make an impact. Many of the tools, inventions, and ideas we rely on today came to be because someone decided to challenge the norm.
As I teach my children about creating their own futures, I remind them of this truth: wealth, fame, even world-changing ideas often come from the spark of doing things your way.
